Well, at least we made it more than 300 yards down the driveway, the target Geoff had suggested we might shoot for.
August 2, 2007 We just completed our first official day on the road! It was tearful goodbyes all around at my sister’s and at Linda’s. I’m going to miss you all terribly but of course, it’s always easier to be the "leaver" instead of the “leavee”. Miles and Kell playing with rockets in Linda's backyard. Miles taking his last look at Long Beach before heading North. Our first day was complete with brake problems and running out of gas as we pulled into our first campground. Otherwise, it was uneventful…yeah right. Well, at least we’re in a different state. New Hampshire to be exact, at the Crazy Horse Campground in Littleton. Very quaint, very clean, lots of families out here for the whole season it seems. And some year-round folks too. On the way up, we decided to test the limits of our fuel tank since we wanted to arrive before closing at 10 pm. But when we pulled into the last gas station before our destination, we found out that the coveted “Ultra Low Sulfur” diesel fuel that our truck requires may not be so easy to come by up here. In fact, they don’t seem to know that it exists up here. So then we called OnStar for our first roadside assist, and we told them make sure they bring only “Ultra Low Sulfur” and when the guy arrived, he just said, “I don’t know anything other than that it’s diesel. Up here, there’s only two kids on diesel, highway and off-road”. Oh well, so much for being “green”. Now, here we sit, not in our designated campsite, but parked in front of the main office, for everyone to wake up to in the morning saying “Oh, those are the new folks who couldn’t figure out how much fuel they’d need to get up the hill!” True enough I guess. The up-the-hill part anyway. We were joking before getting into bed that because we’re parked on such an incline, the blood will be rushing to our head all night. But seriously, Miles was having visions of the trailer rolling backwards down the hill during the night – amusing. Anyway, it’s nice to be up here in the mountains and to feel the cool night air (something that seemed to be in such short supply back home)! Going to sleep with thoughts of what I’m leaving behind and what we have to look forward to (just booked our first ferry trip --- from St. Johns, New Brunswick to Digby, Nova Scotia, for Monday afternoon!). Bon Soir! |
