We're finally in Canada!
August 6, 2007 We made our way quickly to Nova Scotia, where we now sit in a quite confined (and not so woodsy or beautiful) campground. We made our way from Littleton up through Maine and spend the night in Bangor. Then, onto Calais where we crossed the border into New Brunswick. We waited a long time in the line to get through customs and when our turn came, everything went smoothly. But then, just after the question about whether or not we were carrying explosives on board or whether we owned firearms at all, Kell started telling the customs officer about the rocket launcher. We just kind of laughed and hoped she didn’t hear, and I guess she didn’t because she quickly waived us on. Whew!
Then we drove on to St. John, where we took the ferry over the Bay of Fundy to Digby, Nova Scotia. The crossing was beautiful. We must have crossed the Bay of Fundy at high tide because we didn’t get to witness any great wave action or tides moving. Kell, of course, was looking forward to the chance to see some whales, or as he says “dolephins” while on the ferry but although I glimpsed a few Minke whale dorsal fins, that was the extent of our whale watching.
On the St. John's Ferry with Nova Scotia in the background. We’ll be here in Digby for one night and then probably look for greener pastures up the coast a bit. Miles has been wavering about whether to attend some teachings that will take place in Halifax next week. It’s hard to know who should get the “pass” to do retreats and go to teachings while the other takes care of Kell. Especially when we’d both like to do them together. Oh well.
I felt my first pangs of missing home today when we got some troubling news about Lourdes. She’s in the hospital and will hopefully make it the two more weeks she needs to get to viability with her triplets, but it’s quite iffy at this point. I really wanted to be there for her and felt like a real cad for leaving when I did.
When we pulled into camp tonight, it immediately began to rain. So, we’ll stay in and eat what we have left of our supplies – some soup and bread and cheese. Veggies will have to come tomorrow. Miles is cooking – yay! Luckily, we’ll have wine for awhile – enjoying the case that Annette and Jacques gave us for our wedding.
Kell is a little bit crazed after two full days on the road and now sits on the “throne” yelling his loudest at the rain to go away. “I hate the rain. I hate you rain. Go away rain! Rain is the baddest, buggiest, booniest, bodiest, bugger, burger, you’re a rotto rain! Rain stop pouring!”
Rain or shine, tomorrow we’ll get to do some hiking along the coast line and see some of the tidal action from the Bay of Fundy. |
